Web Applications in Real Life

Web Applications in Real Life (Photo credit: HubSpot)

In today’s society applying for a position may involve filling in one of those internet application forms that many employers have on their web sites.   The advantage to applying for a position using an existing employer’s web site application form is that once you have completed the steps, your application for the position is in the hands of the employer immediately.    This is quicker than sending your application by mail to the perspective employer.   This is where technology today is beneficial for both the employer and any perspective employees competing for a particular position.

However, there are certain drawbacks that you should be aware of.   First of all, you should realize that even though these web-based applications usually allow you to upload your resume, the employer initially will screen these applications by what information you provide them in these pre-set questions within these web applications they provide.  If the employer does not see what he/she wants to see then they are not going to waste their time downloading and reading your personal resume.  That little tidbit can be problematic when the employer is using an outdated internet application form.

Case in point is that most employers are using outdated application forms that do not allow a perspective employee to list prior employment in different countries.  Next time you are filling out one of these online forms look at how they are set up.  You will note that most forms will ask you for the employer’s name, address, city, and STATE.  So, if you have worked for an employer for any length of time that you would like to show the employer certain skills that you have and this employer resides outside of the United States; you are out of luck.

Now, you may think that this is okay because you have listed these credentials on your resume which you were able to upload with the online application; you would be wrong.  Remember, the purpose of these online applications is so that the employer can quickly set aside those applicants they are not interested in because of their work experience or lack of just by looking at these online application forms.  So, if your skills or experience are not listed because of a lack of ability to complete this section, the employer is not going to bother looking at your personal resume.

Not all employers use the same internet application forms; I have come across a few that allow you to give an address outside of the United States.   However, I find that the majority of these forms do not.

To me this begs the question; is the employer’s internet application out of date or is the employer being discriminatory?

What are your thoughts?

My Deck Garden – at night

Well I tried to take some pictures of my hummingbirds to no avail even though they were still around this time of the night.  However, I did get some pictures of my moon plant which opens its flowers only at night-time.  I threw in a few pictures of my tomatoes and my strawberries which you can see are still producing some nice berries and still flowering!

Enjoy!

Hummingbirds are such interesting creatures!  I designed my deck to attract hummingbirds and have not been disappointed.  Of course, I have been waiting all summer long for their return; well return they did!

They seem to like sitting on my tomato cages and flying back and forth to the hummingbird feeder and they are on my deck constantly these last few days.

What I find interesting and did not think I would ever see is a hummingbird sitting and pruning its feathers right in front of me.  Usually when you see a hummingbird its wings are going a hundred miles a minute, so to actually catch one just sitting without using its wings is a treat!  My hummingbird will sit on one of my tomato cages and start pruning its feathers and I have even caught him drinking from the hummingbird feeder while just sitting on the edge and not hovering as they usually do.

The treat just a few minutes ago was watching one hummingbird chase another hummingbird off my deck and then sit on the tomato cage as if to say “this is my territory”.

I just wish that I could take a picture once of my hummingbird but I am either so close I do not want to disturb the little feller or I grab my camera and he flies away.  Will keep trying and if I do get a decent shot I will be sure to publish the picture.

It is the simple pleasures of life that make your day and watching the hummingbirds is a special treat for me!

Whether you are young or old, the road to independence does not occur over night.  It is a learning process that takes years of educating yourself to be truly independent.  There are those who want to be independent and those that have found themselves in a situation that requires they become independent.  My road to independence as a female evolved because I found myself in a situation that required me to be independent; it was not a choice that I made but after ten years of living alone, I now can say that I am truly an independent individual.

Women who for different reasons such as becoming divorced, losing their husband, or those who have not found their better half should seriously look at ways they can help themselves become more independent.  All women should be independent to a certain degree whether they have a life partner or not because in life surprises and changes occur quickly.  You may be in a relationship today but you cannot guarantee what the future holds and you may be alone in the future.  All the more reason to start today becoming more independent so that you will be able to handle what comes in the future.

Becoming independent starts with stepping stone with which you consistently build on.  For example take control of your finances; if you are in a relationship you should be aware of your families’ finances, such as the bills and the amount of money coming in to cover those bills.  If there are investments or savings accounts, etc. you need to know what amounts and where these accounts are.  However, independence goes well beyond this, but it is a start.

I can say that in the last ten years I have accomplished many independent moves such as moving from one country to another myself, going back to school at age 50 and graduating summa cum laude, learning how to do plumbing, electrical work, household repairs, and the list goes on and on.

I invite women who want to become independent to join in this discussion and share your independence with me.  But especially, I want to invite those women who need to become independent to ask questions which I will try to answer.
